Detailed information about Categories: What each Category involves at a university level

Note: These are the requirements of nominees at the University level. Please check with your Faculty Coordinator regarding what is required of you in the initial faculty stage.

Category A: Student Centred Teaching (HE & TAFE)

About the category The teaching reflects a student centred focus - evident in the thinking underpinning the teaching as well as its practice and impact.
Eligibility Both individuals and teams from Higher Education or Technical and Further Education are eligible to apply.

Teams may be either solely teaching teams, or teams including non-teachers, who directly impact on student learning through their engagement with students (including using multimedia, on-line and other at-a-distance media).

Nominees must be current staff members of RMIT and have a minimum of two full time or two part-time years continuous service. Sessional staff are encouraged to apply.

Previous Award recipients will not be eligible for re-nomination in the same category, however all other previous nominees are eligible for re-nomination.

University level selection criteria Nominees must be able to demonstrate that:
  1. The students are achieving valued learning outcomes
  2. The students are actively engaged in learning to achieve desired outcomes
  3. The teaching and assessment strategies used in practice facilitate active engagement
  4. Planning for teaching is reflective and scholarly

University level submission requirements The submission to the University Selection Panel will consist of written evidence from various stakeholders such as students, peers and supervisors. In addition, the nominee will also be required to submit their own written statement of evidence against the University selection criteria and participate in a 20 minute interview with the University Selection Panel. A full explanation of the University level submission requirements can be obtained from your Faculty Coordinator.
Requirements of 2001 Award recipients All recipients are required to participate in suitable dissemination activities about their practice.

Any nominee in the HE sector of this Category may be asked to represent RMIT in the national DETYA scheme &quote;Australian Awards for University Teaching&quote; (AAUT). A substantial separate submission will need to be prepared with Faculty and department support in July/August, 2001. For more information refer to the requirements of the 2000 AAUT Awards available from http://www.autc.gov.au or contact your Faculty Coordinator.

Category B: Scholarship of Teaching

About the category The scholarship of teaching involves opening teaching to public review in collaboration with peers. It draws on and participates in national and international communities of teaching and learning in the relevant discipline. It aims to enhance practice in RMIT and elsewhere, and, through systematic investigation, add to knowledge about teaching and learning in the discipline.

The scholarship of teaching strives to be student-centred.

Eligibility Both individuals and teams are eligible to apply.

Teams may be either solely teaching teams, or teams including non-teachers, who directly impact on student learning through their engagement with students.

Nominees must be current staff members of RMIT and have a minimum of two full time or two part-time years continuous service. Sessional staff are encouraged to apply.

Previous Award recipients will not be eligible for re-nomination in the same category, however all other previous nominees are eligible for re-nomination.

University level selection criteria Nominees must be able to demonstrate that:
  1. Planning for teaching is based on nationally and internationally acknowledged good teaching practices
  2. Curriculum is informed by, or contributes to, current research in the industry, discipline or profession
  3. Planning for teaching involves openly reflective cycles of improvement
  4. Actively contributes to enhancement of teaching and learning
  5. Research is conducted in their areas of teaching practice

In addition, all nominees are expected to be actively committed to student-centredness in teaching practice.

Category C: Research Supervision

About the category

The research supervision is student focused and reflects scholarship in research and learning.

Eligibility

Staff involved in research supervision with senior supervisor responsibility are eligible to apply. Nominees must be on the RMIT supervisor's register.

Nominees must be current staff members of RMIT and have a minimum of two years continuous service.

Previous Award recipients will be eligible for re-nomination in the same category.

University level selection criteria

Nominees must demonstrate that:

1. The students are achieving valued learning and research outcomes.

2. The research supervision process facilitates students developing appropriate skills and knowledge.

3. Current research in the relevant discipline area(s) informs supervisory practice.

4. The research supervision is innovative and informed by nationally and internationally acknowledged best practices.

5. The research supervision is the basis of scholarly contributions to research practice.
